Ice Boots & Cold Therapy

Effective cooling therapy to reduce heat, manage swelling and support post‑exercise recovery

Ice boots for horses are one of the most practical and effective ways to reduce heat and swelling after exercise or acute injury. Modern designs make cooling therapy easy to apply, consistent, and far more convenient than traditional ice, making ice boots an essential part of many horses’ recovery routines.

Why Ice Boots Matter

Research has shown just how important it is to cool your horse’s legs after strenuous work. Tendons generate heat as a natural by‑product of energy transfer, and this heat can accumulate to levels that may weaken tendon fibres over time.
Using ice boots for 10–20 minutes immediately after exercise helps bring limb temperatures down quickly, supporting recovery and reducing the risk of long‑term damage.

Cooling After Injury

Ice boots are also widely used in the early stages of acute injury to help manage inflammation. Quick, effective cooling can support comfort and help control swelling during the initial healing period.

Gel‑Based Ice Boots

Most modern ice boots for horses use gel inserts rather than traditional ice. Gel offers several advantages:

  • It is slightly less cold than ice, reducing the risk of surface tissue damage
  • It maintains a consistent temperature for longer
  • It moulds closely to the leg for even cooling

Some designs also incorporate light compression, improving contact for cold transfer and helping to support fluid clearance.

No Freezer? No Problem

If you don’t have access to a freezer, Premier Equine Cold Water Compression Boots are an excellent alternative. Their specialist fabric activates with water to deliver effective cooling, making them ideal for competitions, travel or yard use.

Heat Therapy Options

Many of the ice boots we supply can also be used for heat therapy. Warmth can be beneficial for longer‑term recovery, helping to promote circulation and support tissue repair. Alternating heat and cold is a common approach to encourage drainage without allowing inflammation to progress.

Complementary Therapy Options

Ice therapy can be combined with other supportive products such as:

  • Magnetic boots to encourage circulation
  • Magnetic bands for horses for convenient lower‑limb support
  • Infrared therapy boots and socks for warmth and comfort
  • Incrediwear circulation socks as a cooling or post‑exercise alternative

These products work alongside ice boots to create a complete recovery and maintenance routine for horses in regular work.
